27 Apr Spring Social Security Updates and May Payment Dates 

Recent changes made by the SSA and the dates that SSDI beneficiaries can expect to receive their payments for May 2022.

Reopening of SSA Field Offices 

In March of 2020, the Social Security Administration (SSA) had closed their field offices due to the Covid-19 pandemic. All services offered by the SSA became remote since, with exceptions for critical cases. However, this April, the offices have reopened for in person services. 

The SSA field offices officially reopened their doors on April 7th, 2022. In person services will be offered to all, including those who do not have appointments scheduled. Although, the agency does recommend scheduling an appointment online prior to visiting the office. 

Kilolo Kijakazi, the acting commissioner of the SSA, stated: “To avoid waiting in line (at a field office) I strongly encourage people, who can, to use our online services at www.socialsecurity.gov, call us and schedule appointments in advance rather than walking in without an appointment. Phone appointments can save you a trip to a busy office.”

According to the agency, the busiest times at the office are early in the morning, early in the week, and early in the month. The less busy times to call tend to be before 10 AM., after 4 PM. or later in the week. Wait times are often shorter later in the month. To avoid crowds and waiting, you may want to take these times into consideration. 

The SSA will also be requiring in person visitors to mask up, regardless of their vaccination status. Masking and social distancing rules will be enforced at the field offices. 

Upcoming Payment Dates

For SSDI beneficiaries, May brings the next round of payments. The dates that you receive your benefits correlate to your birthday. 

Those who were born between the 1st and 10th receive their SSDI payments on the second Wednesday of each month. Beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th receive their SSDI payments on the third Wednesday each month. Those born between the 21st and 31st  will receive their payments on the fourth Wednesday of each month. 

For May, those born between the 1st and 10th will receive their benefits on May 11th, 2022. Those born between the 11th and 20th will receive their benefits on May 18th, 2022. And those born between the 21st and 31st will receive their benefits on May 25th, 2022.
