29 Dec SSDI Changes & Payment Schedule For 2024
With the new year, there are some new rules with Social Security disability insurance (SSDI). Here are changes you should be aware of and dates to keep an eye out for:
SSDI Income Limits (SGA):
The Social Security Administration (SSA) has an income cap in place to determine who is eligible for SSDI. They call this cap “substantial gainful activity” (SGA). A person who can work and earn over the SGA limit is considered ineligible for SSDI.
Currently, to qualify for SSDI, you must be unemployed or working and earning under $1,470 per month. In 2024, the monthly limit will increase to $1,550.
SSDI Benefit Amount:
The SSA increases the benefit amount SSDI recipients earn based on the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) from that year.
The COLA is determined by the Department of Labor. It is based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). The CPI-W monitors consumer buying trends and prices of goods. When the CPI-W is higher, it indicates inflation. When there is an increase in inflation, COLA increases to ensure that beneficiaries are receiving enough money to live comfortably.
The 2024 COLA is 3.2%, meaning each SSDI beneficiary will see a 3.2% increase in their monthly payments.
With this adjustment, the average SSDI payment will increase from $1,489 to $1537. The maximum monthly payment someone can receive from SSDI will increase from $3,627 to $3,822.
These increases will begin in January 2023.
SSDI Payment Schedule & 2024 Payment Dates:
While your monthly payments may be changing in 2024, the payment schedule will follow the same rules they currently follow.
